Tips
- Agree on names once. linkedin, not LinkedIn or li. Write your list down and reuse it.
- Medium is the channel type. social, email, cpc, referral. GA4 groups channels by it.
- Never tag internal links. UTMs on your own site overwrite where the visitor really came from.
Questions
Which UTM parameters do I need?
utm_source (where: linkedin, newsletter) is the one that matters most. Add utm_medium (social, email, cpc) and utm_campaign to group a launch. Term and content are optional.
Should UTM values be lower case?
Yes. Analytics treats LinkedIn and linkedin as different sources. This builder lower-cases values and swaps spaces for underscores.
Do UTMs hurt SEO?
Not on links you share. Don't add them to internal links on your own site, where they reset the original source of the visit.
